Golden Milk

I remember when I started to make golden milk back when I lived in Prague couple years ago, when not that many people knew about it and one had to go to a special spice store to buy turmeric.. But every since then I love it, it is such a comforting drink, especially when you feel like you might be going down with something. And according to one small study, curcumin can help to improve your mood, which is much needed these days.

Ingredients

50ml milk of your choice
2tbsp fresh turmeric - peeled and thinly sliced (it was about 3cm)* or 1tsp ground turmeric
1tbsp fresh ginger - peeled and thinly sliced (about 1cm of ginger) or 1/4-1/2tsp ground ginger
1/4tsp cinnamon
Pinch of black or cayenne pepper*

Method

  1. Add all the ingredients to a small sauce pan and whisk them to combine.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes.

  2. Taste to adjust flavour - add some sweetener if you fancy, strain through a sieve into a cup and serve.

Notes

If you’re using fresh turmeric, be aware that turmeric turns everything yellow - so I chopped it on a chopping board that I don’t really care about and wore gloves (otherwise it would stain my fingers for couple of days - trust me, I’ve been there 😅)
In case you’re not going to use all fresh turmeric you bought - peel it, slice it and put it in a freezer (and you can do the same with fresh ginger).
About the cayenne and black pepper - it is added because piperine in pepper helps your body to absorb curcumin (your body on its own is not able to absorb it). But there are few people that say it has to be cayenne pepper and some that say it has to be black pepper.. So why not to add pinch of both?
